6. Of Rolf, Wiggia and JD

At the old N.O., we used to have a few regulars writing … two were Wiggia and JD … both took umbrage over some politically motivated remarks of mine at the time and that was that. Both were taken in from the cold by Rolf (Sackerson), bless his heart … I still remember his many kindnesses (or should that be “acts of kindness”.

Anyway, I’m not sure whether (or should it be “if”) it’s Wiggia writing in the quote (or should that be “quotation”) below (should that have been split or not split 🤔, should I use or not use emojis, should I be using question marks) … or was it Rolf who had the medical situation or was it someone else being quoted?

Whichever way it is, this HERE is the quote:

“I normally manage to put together an article on the best wines for Christmas according to what I have tasted, but this has been a strange period in my imbibing journey and I explain below why I have had to pull the plug on this year’s edition.”

He refers to a medical procedure three years ago … and that leads me (this is JH now) to reflect on chaps (and chapesses) of our vintage … to our medical issues which start to accrue … it took our Steve out but as he wrote … his sense of duty had him return early.

Yes … and I’m wondering just how many serious or approaching issues are not being mentioned in the interest of male stoicism (mustn’t grumble). In short … we communicate, post, operate … just how well is each of us?

  1. I’ve completely lost my taste for red wine – I now actively dislike it. It happened after a stay in hospital but I suspect the particular reason was a change in drug regime introduced there. Someone online suggested that it’s made me too sensitive to tannin, which sounds plausible to me. I am also now pretty much indifferent to white wine. Happily I still enjoy beer and an occasional G&T. More surprisingly, I can still enjoy the fortified wines sherry and Madeira.

The latter is rather expensive but when you’re not buying table wine that pays for it, eh?

    ……

    JH: Spirits?

  2. #9: you forgot the punchline. It was the people who failed whom Harvard admitted.

Moosherama: I like all the ratting caps. I have fond memories of goalies wearing them too rather than the odious baseball caps.

  3. Re #9 – I’m going to say 98.

    ……

JH: I have a different total, MD … shall wait till just before jazz and then put my total and reasoning here in comments.

  4. The question, as written, is ambiguous. The first phrase should read either…

Seven men, each have seven wives, … [Answer = Seven cubed. ]
    or
    Seven men each had a wife…. [Answer = Forty-nine.]

    Grammar wins each time.

    • I read that as seven men each with a wife, making fourteen adults. Each couple having seven children, making fortynine. Total being sixty three. Please bear in mind that I was never good at sums in school, or English for that matter.

      ……

JH: This is what I had, Andy … but there are caveats (later).

  5. The obvious answe is 63 but various assumptions are needed because it’s illogically worded. Did each man have one or seven wives each?

    ……

JH: Precisely, Woodsy. My first thought was Sheik Yabooti is one of them, with 7 wives, then two gays and a troon, two denizens of lesboss isle etc. Which alters the arithmetic somewhat. But yes, if we can assume a normal, civilised arrangement, then 63 seems the answer.

  6. We all seem to agree it’s badly worded – my take is this: “7 men have 7 wives” = 14 adults. Then it says “Each man and each wife have 7 children”. It does NOT say “Each man and wife” which is, no doubt, what they assume you’ll think. So I make that 7 children for EVERY adult – the men could have 7 kids each from previous relationships! Now you have 7 x 14 = 98 children (my first answer) plus the 14 adults = 112

    ……

    JH: 😁

  7. Off topic – I just discovered that Gab now requires an account to view the site – it didn’t up until yesterday.

    ……

JH: Does it? I’ve had an a/c for years, it started working again a few months back.
