The Bellona Club was a good episode but imho, this one is better over the distance, plus it does not stray into that offputting female academic Harriet Vane Gaudy Night feminazism rubbish … said lady being far too full of herself and unpleasant for mine.
Trouble with this one is the quality of the copies … first is good that way until near the end when they pull that muted sound stunt, the second is a poor copy but needs to be waded through to get to the third … the fourth is not too bad.
The criticism of Ian Carmichael in this role is that he’s too OTT with the foppishness and there are certain times when … well, enough of that. Enjoy if possible.
By coincidence – if you can stomach the BBC – the radio version (also Ian Carmichael) is currently available on BBC sounds; it’s reasonably well done (a few odd editorial choice buy aren’t there always?)
