  1. A thoroughly lovely aeroplane. It, unfortunately, was the wrong machine for the time. If the project had been managed differently perhaps it would still have been in service still… If the government of the time had left the designers, English Electric/Vickers to choose the engine (RR Medway was preferred) then it would probably have flown earlier. I had the privilege polishing XR220 whilst I was training at Cosford. A lot of the technology ended up in Harrier/Tornado. Interestingly, it was the first a/c to be fitted with a Head up Display. It wasn’t particularly sucessful though.
    Aeroplane Monthy just did a good item on the political side of it.
