Wednesday [3 to 6]

(0648) Oops, slept in again. (0750)

6. Ah, I did save some Signal comments after all

……

JH: That was a torrid Wednesday opener at HQ, as well as out there in the world. That’s why we’re primarily better as a newsgathering site, as long as different angles are coming in. Personally, I’ve loaded what I have, now I’m going to Steve’s links, then see what IYE might say or other regulars or irregulars, also having a quick look at the Beeb front page to see what they were trying to spin. When I start my blogrounds, there’ll be more.

JH: Here we go again … a test of how to abridge text. With Steve here, IYE and DAD, plus anyone else in comments … the rules must change regarding abridging quotes. For a start, the originals are perma-available by just going there, mine here are just signposting summaries. Then there is the reader who requires succinct summaries, the general idea only … the originals are there to check them against.

The purpose of Wed 1 today was for external quotes moreso than our own droppers. There’ll no doubt be exceptions but in general, maybe it’s now been covered, this abridging biz.

* The Ratcliffe Signal biz in the US was blowing up last evening … not sure I’ll post on it, it seems to be covered … I might have saved a sscrot last night, shall look.

**Same.

***German parlmt’s never sat before? Shall check this out.

4. An abridged item at TLS today

“Toby Young was given his peerage for the wrong reason. He deserved elevation to the Lords for his creation of Lockdown Sceptics (as the Daily Sceptic was first known) alone. It was a beacon of sanity in a time when the entire world went mad…..

[…]

The single most important reason for lockdown was fear. Both the vast majority of the public and politicians were deathly afraid.….

The second fundamental reason for lockdown was the fact that ‘combatting the virus’ was, for a lot of people, tremendous fun. It gave people a purpose in life that they had never enjoyed before.….

The third reason for lockdown that Toby misses is that it was all for free […] the government in its munificence tore up the economic rule book to run the largest bar tab in the history of the universe.”

…….

JH: Almost immediately after writing all that in Wed 1, which even confused me, it was put to the test with DAD’s drop and now TDS. Didn’t want a page full of […]s all the way down, blighting the page and belying the entire reason for abridging, which was to make more succinct.

Hence mentioning now that other device … the final word, followed by five dots…..

3. DAD at 1005

a) Could it be connected with the stealing of sheep recently? It was a resident of the La Lœuf neighborhood, who walked every morning along the banks of the Cher River, who made the discovery on Monday, March 17. Nine 30-litre bags of garbage…..

b) A fiery Western leader on immigration is desperate to deport a series of violent criminals southward to a country the West once had great influence over—but that country is resisting. France (did you think I was talking about somewhere else?) is home to a very large Algerian population…..

c) Turkey’s democratic façade collapsed on March 19, when Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu – the West’s secular poster boy – was snatched from his bed in the middle of the night and thrown in jail…..

d) A Polish court has upheld a decision by the Mayor of Toruń to stop an anti-abortion protest over the display of a picture of a foetus.
