a. What’s this?
b. Is gravity the same everywhere on earth?
c. Maxwell’s equations, plus L****** force law, form the foundation of classical electromagnetism, classical optics, electric and magnetic circuits.
d. The purpose of an alkyd in art?
e. Which non-English team won the FA Cup and when?
f. How many is a quire?
g. On our nudiustertian day, HQ ran Downtown Train and showed Bezo’s bird. Which day was that in day-of-the-week terms?
A. Looks like a Bex Bissel. Carpet sweeper, sans handle.
F. Either 25 leaves of paper or an alternative spelling of the choir in a church. (When I was a paper boy I took a quire of Evening Standard to sell in the pubs, those quires were 26 copies).
…….
JH: Carpet sweeper indeed … Toodles got it too but think maybe she didn’t want to say. 25 eh? I had a dozen written down but bow to you as you were in the biz.
B. There is an entire branch of science called Geodesy which concerns itself with measuring gravitational differences. For example gravity is less on mountain tops than at sea level. Notwithstanding this, there is something called the Universal Gravitational Constant.
c. The equations of James Clerk Maxwell led to relativity and quantum physics, not to classical physics which was already well established by Newton. No idea who was L******. Leibnitz?
……..
JH: Lorentz, KE, and thanks for the details. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorentz_force
Some tricky ones there. I’ll have a stab…
d. Alkyd paint is used to seal oil paintings, because it has a similar consistency to oil but sets hard like enamel.
e. Cardiff City won the FA Cup in 1927. Strictly speaking the Welsh were the original Englishmen, even though the word ‘Welsh’ means ‘foreigner’ in Anglo-Saxo English. We can fight it out on the pitch.
g. Wednesday.
…..
JH: Ta. “g” … the word means “third day” before or after, I posed the question on Friday, so working back, it depends on your definition of “third” … Friday, Thursday, Wednesday being correct … or else you go by 24 hour blocks … thus first to that time Thursday, second to that time Wednesday, third to that time Tuesday. Interesting one, innit?
I took it to mean ‘day before yesterday’. ‘Bezo’s bird’ should have given the game away; she gave his game away with that ‘headlighting’ pic.
……
JH: Indeed.
